Did you know…..that the month of May holds 3 wonderful festivals? The Ascension of our Lord which falls on May 1, the beginning of Pentecost on May 11, and Holy Trinity on May 18 .

The Ascension festival of the church is celebrated on the 40th day after Easter when our dear LORD and Savior, Jesus Christ, made His way back into Heaven to sit on the right hand of our God and Father. On this day our paraments remain white as it did during Easter.

Then the day of Pentecost celebrates the sending of the Holy Spirit to the disciples following Jesus’ ascension. This day falls 50 days after Jesus’ resurrection and 10 days after His ascension. Not surprising at all that the word “Pentecost” is derived from the Greek work for “fifty”. Also, this day is seen as the culmination of the Easter season. The color red of our paraments symbolizes the tongues of fire that appeared on the apostles.

Now the celebration of The Holy Trinity is the one major celebration in the year that has its focus in a doctrine or teaching. The actual words “Trinity” or “Triune” don’t appear in the Bible….anywhere. But the teachings from God, of course, are there and we had to call it something so…..Holy Trinity it became. We change the paraments to white for this Holy day but move to the traditional green paraments the following Sunday, May 25, which carries on with the Pentecost season.
